Indian Railways is a huge establishment, which is one of the largest rail network in the world as well as one among the biggest employer. There are more than 12600 trains operated daily by Indian railways plus many freight trains. The overall administration of Indian Railways is done by the Railway Ministry of Central Government. For administrative ease, Railways is split into 16 different zones.

Each zones have sub-divisions also. There are zonal headquarters at different parts of the country. Under 16 zones, there are sixty-eight divisions in total now. Among the major divisions of Indian Railways, Northern Railway is one of the highest revenue making and key zone. The zone is headed by a general manager who reports directly to Central Railway Board.

Northern Railways is called as the 17the zone if we consider the Kolkata Metro zone too. The headquarters of Northern Railways is at New Delhi Railway Station, and this consists of many sub-divisions. Northern Railways is one among the nine oldest zones under Indian Railways.

It is also the biggest in terms of total network length with 6807 kilometer route of track. Northern Railway zone covers Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. The union territories of Chandigarh and Delhi also come under Northern Railway zone.


Northern Zone was created back in April of 1952 by merging the existing Bikaner Railway, Eastern Punjab Railway, Jodhpur Railway and three other divisions of East Indian Railway of Mughalsarai in Uttar Pradesh.
